What is Drvinst.exe? What does it do?

The genuine drvinst.exe file is a software component of Microsoft Windows or HighPoint RAID Management by Microsoft or HighPoint Technologies. “DrvInst.exe” installs device driver software to communicate between a hardware device (such as a disk drive, printer, speaker, or mouse) and the computer operating system or an application. The version of Microsoft in “C:\Windows\System32” (and also in “C:\Windows\SysWOW64” on 64-bit systems) installs drivers for any device.

HighPoint Technologies also has the process “DrvInst.exe” found in “C:\Program Files\highpoint technologies, inc\highpoint raid management“, which only loads drivers for disk devices for use in a RAID. The RAID concept was first chosen in 1988 by three UC-Berkeley engineers at the SIGMOD conference to bring together less expensive personal computer disk drives better than high-end host drives. Since 1998, RAID controller chipsets manufactured by HighPoint Technologies, based in Milpitas, CA, USA, with offices in Taiwan, Beijing and Nanjing, have been standard on many PC motherboards.
